How are lessons booked and paid for on Tutorfair?

All lessons between a tutor and client are booked and paid for through the Tutorfair system.
The client books a lesson by clicking on a time slot in a tutor’s availability calendar, and then paying for it online.
Tutors can add lessons to messages via the "suggest lesson" feature, to make this even easier.
 

For how long do the bookings go through Tutorfair?

All lesson bookings go through Tutorfair.
Tutors are ranked on the number of lessons taught with each client as a measure of their success.

 

How does a client get in touch with tutors on Tutorfair?

Clients will send tutors a message through the messaging system. 
Tutors will receive an email and SMS alert when they have a new message. Tutors are ranked based on their responsiveness, and so it is important to be prompt with all replies.

How should clients and tutors exchange personal contact details (phone number, e-mail address, Skype/Facebook ID etc) on Tutorfair?

For safety, phone numbers and email addresses are not allowed to be exchanged prior to a booking.

After booking and paying for a lesson, the client will be automatically sent the tutor’s phone number.

The tutor will also be sent the client’s phone number, and the address where the lesson will take place.

After a client has booked a tutor, restrictions on that message thread will be lifted so additional contact information can be exchanged through the messaging system.

 

What measures can tutors take to protect their personal safety when using Tutorfair?

Tutors should not disclose any contact details to clients who have not booked and paid for a lesson; and NEVER attend a lesson that has not been booked and paid for through the site.

Doing so is a very unsafe practice. Some clients could be not genuine and meeting up with a stranger without them committing to a payment, and disclosing their actual information to us, is dangerous.

 

Is that really necessary? Does Tutorfair really have evidence of ‘clients’ who it might be unsafe for tutors to meet in person?

I’m afraid so. We have found that making clients pay, even a small amount (leaving a record of the credit card used to pay with) is an extremely effective deterrent against people who are not genuine clients. 

 

What measures can tutors and clients take to ensure easy resolution of any payment or booking disputes?

Keep as much communication as possible through Tutorfair’s messaging system; make sure each lesson is booked and paid for in advance through the site.

 

What should tutors do if a client wishes to speak on the phone before paying for a lesson?

The first lesson is covered by the Tutorfair Guarantee this means that the client can go one step better than speaking on the phone and actually meet you! If they aren't 100% satisfied they are entitled to a full refund.
 

What should tutors do if a client asks to pay cash for a lesson?

Explain to the client that this is not allowed. Online payments allow Tutorfair to: rank tutors by the number of lessons they’ve given; resolve any disputes through the record of each transaction; protect the client against any issues with a lesson; and protect tutors by having a record of each client.

If clients need convincing, reassure them that the first lesson booked through Tutorfair is guaranteed, so they can ask for a refund if unhappy.

We find that the clients who refuse to pay in advance may have no intention of paying at all - or they cancel last-minute, or they are not genuine clients.

 

What advantages does Tutorfair offer to clients and tutors?

Tutorfair makes it easier for clients to find tutors. Tutors are ranked in search results by various factors including how many lessons have been booked with them through Tutorfair.

No chasing clients for payment, or losing work cancelled at the last minute: payment is taken before each lesson, and cancellations must be made with at least 24hrs notice.

Tutorfair also safeguards the security of clients and tutors by checking the identity of each tutor, and making clients pay using a credit card before meeting a tutor or seeing the tutor’s contact details.

Finally, the Tutorfair Foundation (funded by Tutorfair) is working to make education fairer.
